Heritage Potatoes.
Recently I was fortunate to spend some quality time at Tiptoe Farm in the stunning Scottish Borders. The farm was voted Overall Winner - Britain’s Most Beautiful Farm 2006. Owned and run by Anthony & Lucy Carroll it is home to the superb range of Carrolls Heritage Potatoes. After meeting the Carrolls at many food events in the past it was a great experience to actually visit the farm to see and feel the real passion and enthusiasm for their stunning range of beautiful potatoes.
We spent a very pleasant evening working our way across a pretty field digging each variety in turn and discussing each potatoes nuances, growing history and their cooking attributes. Wonderfully evocative variety names such as Keppleston Kidney, Peachbloom, Dunbar Rover, Purple Eyed Seedling and Mr. Little`s Yetholm Gypsy to name but a few.
The Carrolls are on a personal crusade to resurrect these wonderful old varieties and re-educate people to these wonderfully tasting potato varieties which have in many cases been lost over time.
